Obituary - Gilbert Clendenny

Gilbert A. (Gib) Clendenny, retired merchant and farmer and life-long resident of Mozier, died at Illini Community Hospital at 1:15 AM, July 8, 1974 at the age of 73 years. Gib had been in ill health for three years and had previously been a patient in the hospital.

Mr. Clendenny was born April 3, 1904 at Mozier, a son of Carey and Cecelia Pontero Clendenny. He had lived in that community all of his life. His father was in the general store business for many years, and Gib started the G. A. Clendenny and Son Store, which is still in business as a newly re-modeled and modern store on route 96. Gib also owned farm land in the Sty Bottom area and was a member of the Pike-Calhoun County Sportsmen Club, being active in hunting and fishing all of his life and being well known by many sportsmen who enjoyed sports and wild life.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marie G. Barnes, whom he married in Bowling Green, Mo. on Dec. 3, 1921; three sons, Bill and Terry Clendenny of Mozier; and Durlin Clendenny of Litchfield; five brothers, Leo Clendenny of Hamburg, Jack and Merle of Pleasant Hill, Louis and Otis of Mozier; three sisters, Mrs. Geneva Schleeper of Hardin, Mrs. Carleen Capps of Kampsville and Mrs. Cecelia Mae Ottwell of Mozier; and six grand-children.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Funeral services were held at Ward-Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill on Wednesday, July 10, 1974 by Rev. William Schmidt, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church of Kampsville, and burial was in Fox Creek Cemetery, near Mozier.
The Clendenny Store at Baytown was closed all day Wednesday honor of Mr. Clendenny.
