Leo N. "Sam" Clendenny, 83, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 at Christian Hospital Northeast.
He owned Leo Clendenny Excavating, which he started in 1956 and operated for 25 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a 40-year member of Union Local 520 of Operating Engineers of East St. Louis; a 58- year member of Westgate Lodge 856 of Hamburg, where he served as Master; member of Mozier Christian Church, Belleville Consistory and Calhoun-Pike Sportsmen Club; a former member of the Hamburg School Board; trustee for Calhoun Unit District 40; and former mayor and councilman of Hamburg.
Born November 23, 1912, in Mozier, he was the son of the late Carrie Edward and Celia A. Pontero Clendenny. He married the former Dora U. Shelton on July 28, 1934 in Carrollton. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry Clendenny of Minooka and Ed Clendenny of Pleasant Hill; three daughters, Janice A. Aderton of Paw Paw, Nancy J. Maddox of Petersburg and Sandra J. Chronister of Little Rock, AK; a brother, J. Merle Clendenny of Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Geneva Schleeper of Hardin and Celia Mae Ottwell of Jerseyville; 14 grandchildren; eight grandchildren. Two sons, Joe and Nick Clendenny, preceded him in death.
Visitation was held Sunday evening at Ward-Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. The funeral was conducted Monday, October 7, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Edward J. Maddox officiating.
