Harry L. Fox, 88, died at 1:03 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 31, 1918, in Mozier to Theodore C. and Nellie L. (Shireman) Fox.
He married the former Ella G. Wood on June 25, 1940, in Quincy, Ill. She died Nov. 16, 1985.
He was a pipe fitter at Clark Oil Company for 36 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, training with "C" Company First Battalion 193rd Glider Infantry regiment at Camp Mackall, N.C. After Tennessee maneuvers, he completed Airborne training at Camp Forest, Tenn., prior to joining the 17th Airborne Division, where he was stationed in England prior to his participation in the Battle of the Bulge. He later joined "L" Company of the 194th Glider Infantry regiment. After flying in a glider behind the Rhine, he was wounded on three separate occasions. He was honored with The Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantry Badge and three Battle Stars; the Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He was also entitled to wear the European-African Middle-Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead and the Gliderman's Badge.
He was a lifetime member of Pipefitters Local 553, VFW Post 1308 in Alton, VFW Post 2859 in Wood River, the American Legion in Louisiana, Mo., and the DAV and The Christian Church in Mozier.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Carole S. and Robert Klunk of Michael, Ill., Joan N. and Gary Greer of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jeannie E. and Robert Fleming of Godfrey; five granddaughters, Michelle Brady, Rebecca Wade, Julie Krol, Lori Kampwerth and Elizabeth Price; 10 great-grandchildren, Alicia Brady, Kayla and Hannah Wade, Jacob and Nicholas Darr, Isaiah Campbell, Caroline and Mary Kathleen Price and Amberly and Caroline Krol; a brother, Kenneth Fox of Mozier; and a sister, Eula Staufler of Nebo, Ill.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Sherri J. Fleming; a sister, Myrtle Peuterbaugh; and five brothers, Loren, Eurban, Harold "Butch," Lloyd and Frank.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. today at Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory in Godfrey. Pastor Bob Phillips will officiate. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, with full military rites by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308 of Alton.
