Obituary - John Ritter

RITTER. Died 29-03-1967.

John C. Ritter, 66 years, 9 months, and 29 days, a former member of the Jerseyville City police force and at one time captain of the Illinois State Highway Police, died at 8 pm, March 29, at Memorial hospital in Springfield where he had been in patient since March 20.

Of late years Mr. Ritter had held a position of engineering technician with the Division of Waterways of the State of Illinois and had been making his home in Kampsville. 

Ritter's death occurred unexpectedly while he was hospitalized for skin grafting of burn wounds of the back sustained on the 17th of the month when he fell across a heating pipe at his home.

Mr. Ritter, a native of Calhoun County was born in Kampsville, a son of the Late Michael & Eva Lena (Hauser) Ritter. The family lived in Jerseyville for a number of years.

His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Gwen Ritter; 1 daughter, Mrs. Joan Craddick of Ypsilanti, Mich.; 1 Brother Arthur Ritter of Kampsville; 1 sister Mrs. Robert Malloy of Jerseyville; 4 grandchildren; 1 stepson, Donald A. Lanctot of Springfield, and 1 stepdaughter, Margaret Elma of San Mateo, California.

He was a veteran of WWI.

Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville where the rosary was recited Friday pm. Requiem mass was celebrated at 10 am Saturday at St. Anselm Church in Kampsville and burial was in St. Anselm cemetery. Committal rites were held under the auspices of the American Legion and VFW.
