Gilead

School closes to day, April 7th.
John Byrd has been dealing in poultry of late.
??? Bailey is ?????? masked on some good looking girl.
Mrs. Roy Waitson will depart for St. Louis Thursday on a visit.
Jacob Dixon who lives on the river bank always has the river on a ???????.
Lou Nason returned from St. Louis Sunday morning after a weeks sojourn.
Miss Agnes Watson will begin a two months term of school at this place on Monday next.
The Mississippi river has raised an inch two nights in succession.
Frank Dixon says he knew the water would be high for he was intending to put in ???? on the Salt Prairie this spring.
Clifford Lewis and Cr. Haynes will attend a meeting of the farmers alliance to be held at N. Franklin on Wednesday night, April ?th.
It takes a sharp scythe to cut smart-weeds. Which one of the old parties is going to garner in the farmers alliance organization
Two news papers in Hardin, Lord sakes! The HERALD’S new line is all O K but what kind of checking post is the other paper to have?
F. A Roberts of Nebo, Ill. Closed a series of lectures on farmers alliance here last Friday night which resulted in sixteen members being added in that organization.
W. S. Wilson now comes of from behind the counter in the store of Wilson & Williams. He says it is much better than cooking for a raft crew and being in water knee deep.

At our Sunday school last Sunday Hix Nevius was chosen Supt. and Lottie Ansell Sec. for the ensuing year.

We are sorry to note the death of one of Calhoun’s old citizens of Crawford Creek. Mr. Surbeck. He leaves a wife and several children.

Don’t fail to come in the S. S. Convention to be held here on the 19. We hope ??? to whom ???? are assigned will be prompt and make it one of the best conventions ever held in the county.

Mr. Nevius will be found riding a new buggy hereafter and not on “thanks horses” as heretofore. We shall indeed be glad to see him comfortably seated in a nice buggy with his wife by his side.

J. E. Watson went to St. Louis Tuesday evening.

T?? Polar Wave, with two barges of grain passed down Wednesday evening.

The Str. Lottus of the Illinois Fish Commission, passed up Monday at 1:25 p.m.

Mr. Fowler, Supt. Of the Thomas Press Brick Co., went to St. Louis Tuesday evening via Str. Pike.

The Niagra with a ???? barge of bulk grain, laid up shore Monday night, leaving Saturday morning for St. Louis.

Mr. F. A. Weber, of the well known and reliable H. A. Weber Nursery, ???? St. Louis, came up on the Str. Pike last Thursday morning with a large stock of fruit trees.

Mrs. Azuba Denham nee Squier, formerly a resident of Hardin, but now of Kansas City, arrived here Saturday morning ??? Str. Pike. Mrs. Denham will remain some time visiting relatives and friends throughout the county.

Mrs. Chris Ringhausen an old and respected German lady died at her (section unreadable) wifely and maternal virtues, ????? her death, the husband looses a kind companion, the family an affectionate mother, and the neighborhood a respected and virtuous woman. The remains were interred in the new catholic cemetery at this place, being the first laid in rest in this ???? spot. After suitable ceremonies and some well directed remarks by Rev. Father Somers, remarks which would be well for us all to take into earnest consideration. The Herald merely voices the sentiments of the community when it extends it’s sympathy to Mr. Ringhausen and family.
