Obituary - Jake Ambrose

AMBROSE, Jake D., born 23-05-1851, West Virginia, died 21-05-1951, buried Carrollton Cemetery.

J. D. "Uncle Jake" Ambrose former well-know resident of Jersey County, died Monday, May 21, just two days before he would have marked his one hundredth birthday anniversary. His death occurred at eleven o'clock in the morning at the home of his wife's son-in-law, Charles Watts, at Michael following an illness of five months. A representative of the Democrat-News called on the aged man Saturday but his condition at that time did not permit an interview.

Mr Ambrose, familiarly known as "Uncle Jake" was born in West Virginia on May 23, 1851, and came to Illinois with his parents in 1865. Most of his life was spent in Jersey and Greene Counties where he engaged in farming and for a time he taught school in Greene County. For several years the aged man made his home in Jerseyville.

The aged man was married six times. His last marriage took place on December 31, 1946, when he was married to Mrs. Mary Becker of Calhoun County, who survives him.

In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs Charles Schneider of Carrollton.

Friends called at the Mehl funeral home in Carrollton until Thursday when funeral rites were held at two o'clock at the Carrollton Baptist Church. Reverend L. Grigg, pastor of the church officiated at the rites and burial was in the Carrollton City cemetery.
