Obituary - Daniel Burge

BURGE, Daniel M. of Pleasant Hill, IL died in Illini Hospital at Pittsfield, IL, Sat., Feb. 5. He was admitted to the hospital January 6, where he was taken for treatment for injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile driven by Burdette Barton of Pleasant Hill.

He received a fracture of the right thigh just below the hip. Mr. Burge was about the middle of the street near the Nationwide Store, when the bumper of the car struck him.

Walter Plattner, Pike County coroner, held an inquest Saturday, and after the jury heard the testimony of Lewis Roberts, H. B. Berry and Kermit McConnell, who witnessed the accident, returned a verdict that Mr. Burge "came to his death by being struck by an automobile driven by Burdette Barton, and accident being unavoidable."

Daniel M. Burge, son of Daniel and Susan Burge, was born in Fulton County, IL, April 3, 1868, and passed away February 5, 1949, at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 2 days.

He came to Calhoun county, IL, with his parents, at the age of 18 years.

 He was married to Melissa Adcox on February 21, 1889. They had spent their 60 years of their married life in Calhoun and Pike Counties with the exception of 14 years when they lived in Missouri.

Mr. and Mrs. Burge were the parents of 5 children, one son dying in infancy, and another son, Lannie died at the age of 22 years.

Surviving are 2 sons, George of Hannibal, MO and Charles of Pleasant Hill, IL and 1 daughter, Mrs. Blanche Clendenny of Mozier, IL.

Mr. Burge was a timber worker and followed tie making, using a broad ax to hew the logs to the specific dimensions. Later he turned his attention to farming and followed this occupation until he retired and moved to Pleasant Hill.

He was converted and united with the Church of Christ at Farmer's Ridge, under the preaching of Eld. George Williams, over 50 years ago.

Surviving are his widow, 2 sons, 1 daughter, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Burge and a sister, Mrs. Martha Moore both of Oakdale, CA.

Funeral services were held in the Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill, Mon., Feb. 7, at 2 pm with Eld. Jesse Williams in charge. Burial was in Long Cemetery in Calhoun county.
