Obituary - Laurence Clendenny

Laurence A. Clendenny, Jr., 77, of Pleasant Hill died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. He was born Sept. 18, 1927 on the family farm in Calhoun County to L.A. "Jack" and Flossie P. Clowers Clendenny. He married Shirley Raye Bartlett May 17, 1947 in Pittsfield and she preceded him in death Nov. 24, 2004.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served with the Seabees and was a member of the Pleasant Hill American Legion Post 1048. Laurence was a former Pleasant Hill firefighter and EMT. He was a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Masonic Lodge 565 AF and AM and was currently serving as lodge secretary. Laurence and his father owned and operated a John Deere dealership in Pleasant Hill for many years, selling the business in 1975. Laurence continued to work for the dealership until he retired in 1989. Following his retirement, he continued to repair farm equipment with his grandson at Clendenny and Jones Garage in Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed antique tractor pulling and working on tractors, bowling and playing computer games. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren, especially attending their various activities.

He is survived by one son, Jack (wife Sandy) Clendenny of Seiling, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Cathy) Hart of Fairhope, Ala.; five grandchildren, Bobby (wife Holly) Jones of Pleasant Hill, Mrs. Scott (Kelly) Campbell of Pleasant Hill, Mrs. James (Brandi) Sheppard of Pittsfield, Mrs. Ryan (Wendy) Shireman of St. Louis, Mo. and Stacy Clendenny of Springfield; five step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Arnold Gene (Pam) Guthrie of Pleasant Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Charlotte Rae Jones; and a granddaughter, Neali Marie Clendenny, and a sister, Imogene Guthrie.

Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Ward-Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill officiated by Rev. Edward Maddox. Visitation was. Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
